Brief_History
Maseno University Library came into existence following the establishment of Maseno University Collegeas a constituent college of Moi University, in 1990. Having inherited entire collectionsof its predecessor institutions—Siriba Teachers College and Government Training Institute libraries, the library moved to consolidate its collections around core course requirements by the University College. As the University’s academic programmes expanded, and the number of students grew, the demand for additional space to accommodate readers and staff became inevitable. This led to the creation of the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) and Resource Centre libraries for postgraduates and undergraduates, respectively. Subsequent expansion of the University’s academic programmes and rapid growth in student populations saw the creation of other of the library namely: Kisumu Campus, Odera akang’o Campus and eCampus Libraries. These libraries have diverse contents to support all the courses offered by various department, schools and campuses.
Four years ago, the library brought together all the former libraries; College Campus, Science, Resources Centre and Postgraduate under one roof which is The Main Library. This was aimed at improving service delivery to users, and ensuringefficient use of the staff and available resources to the full benefit of users. The new building has a sitting capacity of approximately 3,000 readers in addition to providing ample office space for library staff.
The library plans to add new features such as lockable reading carrels, conference and discussion rooms, computer labs, multimedia section, reprographic centre, and boardroom, so as to increase the range of the services available to the users. More so, the library is well-served by Broadband and WiFi Internet connectivity to the Internet requirements by both staff and students.
Last but not least, the security and safety of the students, staff and information material is of paramount concern, and a number of security measures such as Biometric Identity System, Anti-Theft Detection System, have been put in place.
